Mal had been asleep when Inara called, which he thought was just a touch unfair of her to call so early in the morning. He'd been having a good dream, too. Something about a willing woman with dark hair and a handy touch with water and sponge. Come to think of it...

Nah. Mal weren't the type to look at his dreams none too close, anyway.

He dragged himself out of bed and over to the screen, keying it on while scrubbing his eyes and trying to pull himself together enough for something like civilised conversation.

"Bit early for a social call, isn't it?"

Inara was smiling, although she managed to accomplish it without the blush that threatened to stain her cheeks. Mal would insist on sleeping half-naked.

Or all the way naked.

Let's not think about that, she told herself.

"I'm sorry to disturb you, Mal, but there are things happening in town I thought you'd want to know about."

Her voice, for all that she was smiling, was deadly serious.

Mal ran his hand through his hair, though it did little but mess it up more.

"Things in town...Inara, why would I give a fèifèi de pìyăn what's going on in a town we ain't been in but a couple days an' are leavin' just as soon as possible?"

Inara resisted the impulse to sigh. Really, he should know by now that if she was calling him on the ship to report something of interest in town, he should listen.

"Because thirty minutes ago about fifty early-morning merchants and workers saw something, a rip in the air, opening up, and what they saw inside it wasn't the rest of the street."

He blinked, staring at the screen.

"Not the street? What was it then?"

"It's hard to tell, most of them were terrified for their lives." As well they should be, she could only imagine what she'd think if she'd seen it in front of them. "They said it looked like a laboratory."

He scowled, thinking. "Alliance? Though I ain't heard of them even bein' able to split the sky."

"I don't think so. There's been no sign of... of anyone, and if it was Alliance-made, wouldn't they have landed already? There may be one or two people missing. There's one poor girl who's asking if anyone's seen her brother. But no one saw anyone go into the ... the rip, and ... I don't think it's Alliance, Mal. Why would they do that and then not take advantage?"

"Why in the gorram hell would anyone do that, Inara? Ripping the sky an' showing folks things that ain't supposed to be there."

He rubbed the back of his neck. He didn' t like this one little bit.

"Figure the girl's brother just run off when he saw it?"

"I don't know." She sighed. "Probably. I know I would have, and no one's seen him. He sounds quite distinctive, red streak in his hair, and tattoos."

Mal blinked. Stared at the screen.

"Repeat that last bit."

Inara blinked.

"He has... has a red streak in his hair, and tattooes. Fire tattooes, he sounds like quite a rebel."

That's what he'd thought she said.

"Nĭ tāmāde tiānxià suŏyŏu de rén dōu gāisĭ !" He mumbled it, mostly.

"Boy's on the ship, Inara. He's Kaylee's new ài rén."

Inara blinked.

"How..." It wasn't that it was impossible. Except her mind was convinced that it was.

It wasn't impossible, she told herself, pulling herself together. If the sister had only missed him that morning and he'd spent all night on the ship. It wasn't impossible.

"Well, I suppose we'd better get him back to his family, then," she said, with more calm than she felt. "Unless Kaylee's planning on taking him with her."

He sighed, squeezing his eyes shut. He felt a headache coming on.

"It's a mite bit more complicated than that, though boy didn't seem too upset 'bout the thought of stayin' with Kaylee when we leave. River seems to have taken a shine to him, too." Of course, if the girl was really Warren's sister, and thus from Earth that was....

"You'd best round the girl up an' bring her back to the ship. Tell her we've got her brother, safe and sound. Name's Warren, if she wants to be sure."

"I... all right." Her contract was up as of thirty minutes from then anyway. Although she would have to make a hasty excuse. Perhaps a family emergency?

"Mal, what's going on?"

He sighed. "You wouldn't believe me if'n I told you at his point, Inara. But if she's...that there rip an' lab very well might be a lab on Earth-that-was. Seems they was messing with technology they ought not have been..." He shook his head. "Boy tells it a lot more convincingly than I do."

Inara heard 'rip' and 'lab' and those words made sense, but then she heard 'Earth-that-was' and ...

"Mal, have you been drinking?"

"I wish I had been, but no. I told you you wouldn't believe me."

She shook her head. "I'll get the girl and come back to the ship, and maybe then you'll be awake enough to make some kind of sense." She smiled a little, though, to take the sting out of her words.

It was impossible, wasn't it? Earth-that-was had been destroyed long ago. That's why it was Earth-that-was.

He snorted. "Maybe just let the boy an' girl explain it, 'cause I'm still fuzzy on the details myownself."

"All right..." She hoped they could. She wasn't sure, the girl had sounded awfully young.

"See you in an hour or so."

Mal sighed and signed off and tried to figure out just how he was supposed to break this to Kaylee.
